4 firings between 2pm and 6pm, 8 spots in each
550 SW Industrial #194, Bend OR
Join us for one of our monthly raku workshops, led by the one and only Alex Gnefkow here at Mud Lake Studios! Sign ups for each workshop will go live 4 weeks before the event.
Experience the heart-racing thrill of rapid-pace kiln firings and wild, unparalleled glaze effects, with no two pieces ever turning out the same. Raku firing is a fast, dramatic, and often unpredictable pottery technique where glazed pots are removed from a red-hot kiln with tongs and exposed to air, before being plunged into a small chamber filled with combustible material, such as newspaper. The paper burns, creating smoke and flames which color the clay and glaze in organic patterns and the small, closed chamber quickly becomes a reduction atmosphere. The glaze solidifies as the fire burns out and the pot begins to cool. Removing the lid of the chamber, you will find your piece utterly transformed.
Each workshop will have 32 available firing spots available. Each spot is 6”x6”x11” (LxWxH), with 8 spots per kiln load. Consider the size of your pieces when signing up, as anything wider than 6” will need more than one slot, e.g.: a piece that is 10” at it’s widest will take up 2 slots. If your pots are small or narrow, multiple pieces can fit into a single spot.
Participants are required to bring their own bisque pieces on the day of the workshop. (Tip: Mud Lake offers outside firing!) If you have access to raku glaze, we encourage you to glaze your piece beforehand. We will provide clear crackle glaze and copper penny glaze for use day of, but pots are most successful when glazed in advance. If you sign up for the first firing time, keep that in mind! You are welcome to arrive an hour before your firing time to glaze your pieces. (Studio members can use the clear crackle glaze or copper penny glaze whenever they’d like.) If you’re new to raku, clay with grog is generally recommend.
Any questions or concerns, shoot a message to manager@mudlakestudios.com :)
