Curious about new surface design techniques, or looking for tips on carving designs? Join Kay Cooper in Mud Lake’s first sgraffito workshop. For those unfamiliar, sgraffito is a centuries-old decorating technique where you, the artist, paint a layer of underglaze (or colored slip) onto leather-hard clay, and then scratch or carve through the top layer to reveal the original color in the clay beneath. The contrast of the colors makes your design pop!
Kay will be providing pre-thrown tumblers for each participant to practice with, and all underglazes and tools will be provided. Enjoy a thorough demo and then it’s up to you to decide what to put on your cup! Don’t worry, Kay will be there to provide guidance throughout and answer any questions. Aftet the workshop, she will fire your pieces and get them all ready to pick up and use at home.
This workshop is good for all ages and experience levels, although children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult who also purchases a seat.
Check out the photos for examples of Kay’s work, or check out her instagram @gnefknacks for even more!
Instructor Bio: I’ve been doing pottery for a long time, but teaching is an avenue I have only just begun to explore. It brings me great excitement and joy to help others bring their ideas to life by their own hands. There’s something very unique and special in seeing how creative people inherently are, and I hope I can encourage and empower them in their creative journey.
